The timber window industry has many challenges ahead of it over the coming years, but probably none greater than the prospect that timber supplies for the windows are constantly under strain. It is for this reason that Mouldright Joinery was sourcing alternatives to the commonly used Western Red Cedar as far back as ten years. The process is not an easy one, not only does the timber need to be of a standard that we require in terms of finish quality, but also in stability. To add to the difficulty, we also needed it to be a viable long term option also, so we have been able to narrow it down to these three types.
No.2 CLEAR WESTERN RED CEDAR (sample)
Cedar has been used in the timber window industry for decades. Its diversity of colour, natural resistance to rotting and its light weight make it a wonderful product from which to build windows. Cedar is imported from Canada from large Canadian forests, most of which are struggling with the demand for the product. In stained applications cedar offers the customer a deep rich colour which can range from a pale yellow to a deep brown. This contrast is not considered a fault, but rather a natural beauty inherent to the timber itself.
Being a fairly soft timber, cedar can be bruised if used around trafficable areas such as doors, but with a little care, it is certainly worth the trouble.
KILN DRIED HARDWOOD
Kiln Dried hardwood is another excellent product in which to build windows. Unlike Cedar, hardwood is very dense not only making it more dent resistant, but also a lot heavier. We use standard grade hardwood for all our window frames, while select grade timber is used for door manufacture. Predominantly Mouldright used Tasmanian Oak as its hardwood of choice, but occasionally Victorian Ash is used if required. All Hardwood products are Protim Treated prior to assembly.
ARAKARIA PINE (Hoop)
Arakaria pine is our third type of timber we have to offer. A fairly dense pine, Arakaria is far more stable and has hardly any knots unlike a more readily known type of pine, Radiata Pine. Arakaria is grown near Brisbane and is cut from regenerative forrest to ensure the long term existence of supply. Environmental customers and like-minded supporters have been very happy to find us supplying a product that is not reducing our ever-diminishing rain forests. Arakaria Pine is also Protim Treated prior to assembly
RECLAIMED TIMBER
Occasionally there is a requirement that we use reclaimed timber for a particular client. We do work with reclaimed timber if necessary, however only with timber we purchase from suppliers ourselves. Cutters can cost hundreds of dollars to replace, so the source of the reclaimed timber needs to be certain that all metal has been removed prior to sending it to us. Due to these issues and associated factors, Mouldright will not construct windows from timber someone has at home, it simply is not worth the risk.
It is also worth noting that most reclaimed timber is a species of hardwood, but is very difficult to get an exact species of timber you may specify, when it is required. Any quotes including reclaimed timber are quoted on current prices and availability from suppliers, unfortunately the sizes, species and quantities vary largely from one time to the next so we do need some flexibility.
QUOTES
Its important to be aware of what it is you are buying when you receive your quotes. Timbers such as meranti are also on the market place, but due to our concerns we have with the particular timber types, have decided not to use it.. Meranti is a timber type we do not supply, not because we can`t get it, but because we don’t want it. Meranti never paints well, a nice clean solid finish is extremely difficult to achieve, not so with our products. Meranti also has the added bonus attached to it that if you get a piece of heartwood, and its hard to tell buy looking at it, rot can destroy a 3 inch thick sill inside 2 years. No Arakaria pine window is manufactured here and leaves untreated for very good reason, at Mouldright, we simply wont sell or make something that we know will be a problem down the track, and that’s peace of mind for us and our customers.
Mouldright Joinery is the only window manufacturer in Geelong that has its own LOSP treating facility on-site, which is used for hardwood and pine jobs as mentioned, cedar windows are painted with a temporary repellant which is effective for several months until paint or stain can be applied.
